New Building, Old Building: Places in Beauty

By

Jackson St New Plant cropped 4 14

It seems just like yesterday when we moved from our first production plant, in the heart of Seattle’s historic Georgetown neighborhood to our current facility on Jackson Street in Seattle.  In fact, it was just 5 years ago.  Now we are getting ready to move into an entirely new location just three miles away, back towards the Georgetown neighborhood, in Seattle’s SODO industrial area at 7th and Bradford.

“To make a product of beauty, we need to be in a place of beauty.”

This is what guides at Field Roast when we build out, renovate and renew our production places.  Sadly, it is the norm in food manufacturing to enclose foodmakers with white walls, no windows and bright lights.  What a bummer place to spend 8 hours a day!  We were blessed at our Jackson Street facility with numerous skylights—we installed more than 10 windows into our foodmaking places to open them up, creating light, transparency and a sense of space.  The intangibles are tangible!  That was five years ago.

Our new facility at Bradford is certainly a step up in terms of space…ah the space!  HUGE offices, HUGE foodmaking areas, HUGE break room and HUGE warehouse space.  This will allow us to continue to expand our mission to bring tasty veggie meats to carnivores and vegetarians alike.  In fact, the offices were so large that we needed to figure out a way to make them smaller!  We have also built a new test kitchen so we can make some more Field Roast products for you to enjoy.

We move in two weeks’ time…good fortune willing!  Malcolm Lee, who headed up the design and construction of the new site, has done a tremendous job transferring the important design elements that are so much about who we are as a company: windows into the foodmaking area, including one window that opens to another, allowing foodmakers to see the outside light and environment from the center of the production floor, new flooring, carpeting and painted walls add the finishing touches.  Beauty in physical place creates beauty in work lives and in our products.

We are happy and feel blessed to be moving to such a great facility.  Please come by when you are in Seattle for a visit and plan to attend our Grand Opening day sometime in June.

Peace,

david sig

Hi, I love your products. Do you think there's a chance you might start importing them to Australia? Our vegetarian range is far too limited.

If you are near Sydney, you can find our products at Snagstand (a high-end haute dog chain). Other than that, we're working on taking over the world, which is very time consuming ;)

Congrats to the whole team! You've certainly taken a tired shell and given it new life. I really love the perspective you keep in mind for the production teams. Excited to see what developments come out of the new space...
