Field Roast is Coming Back to Canada!

By

It’s been 8 grueling months without Field Roast products officially sold in Canada, and we’re here to tell you it’s almost over. After ceasing distribution in September 2014 due to CFIA regulations that caused quite the upset, we have found a temporary solution and will begin re-introducing our products to Canada, starting the CHFA show in Vancouver, BC this weekend.  After the outpouring of support from Canadian consumers and over 74,000 signatures gathered, we’ve decided to reformulate some of our products as a temporary solution. In the meantime, we have also helped form the Plant Foods Council in order to continue advocating for change.

A Temporary Solution

Canada’s current regulations hold animal foods as the standard of good nutrition, by requiring vegetarian sausages to match the nutritional profile of animal-based sausages. In order to comply, we have added two new ingredients to the Field Roast Sausages; pea protein and a vitamin fortification mixture.

Furthermore, the words “simulated sausage” and “contains no meat” have been added to the label, which is a change made for the sole purpose of offering these products to our Canadian customers. For the past 18 years, the concept of real vegan meat has been rooted in the Field Roast brand, rather than fake animal meat.

There was much controversy surrounding the CFIA regulation that called for testing the protein on animals, however Field Roast was approved to use an alternative method, which did not involve any animals. We are a vegan company, after all.

We are initially only launching our Smoked Apple Sage Sausage, Italian Sausage, and Mexican Chipotle Sausage, which we plan to start shipping towards June 2015. Please be patient as these products begin to appear on store shelves, as that shelf space may currently be occupied. Don’t be afraid to put in a request at your local store! We will provide updates as we look into reformulating additional products this year.

Plant Foods Council

The Plant Foods Council (PFC) is a trade association of food manufacturers who make vegan products similar to traditional animal products such as meats, milks, cheeses and butters.  Consumer interest in health and in plant-based products has been growing for the last 10 years, and continues to grow exponentially.

The animal meat industry currently benefits from large government subsidies, powerful trade associations and support from industry-funded nutrition associations. The Plant Foods Council will work to update Canadian food labelling regulations and promote the health and ecological benefits of a plant-based diet. For information or to join the Plant Foods Council, please visit www.plantfoodscouncil.org. We need your support!

Awesome being closed to the Oroville WA border we were lucky in the South Interior of BC as our nearest US grocer at Princes Stire started carrying Field Roast to encourage CDN shoppers to come down. Running low on my stash now and hoping it will last. Hopefully we can get the full line up here by Summer. Chia cheeses, all the roasts and the burger patties! Thx Field Roast and thank you Princes in Oroville WA.

It is shameful that our government and its agencies refuse to move forward, unguided by the leash held by animal based industry. That they walk, lockstep, behind those who would keep Canadians from healthy and ethical nutritional choices is disgusting and cowardly-to say the least.

Thanks to your company and a few others, we do have a chance at foods that are both good for our health, as well as for the environment-nonhuman animals and their habitat included. Let us hope that this year's election will see the current ruling class turfed.

TO Field roast OH MY GOD THIS SUCKS I am so disappointed these are favorite sausage and NOW I still cant eat them because like almost every other vegan product out there it now has pea protein which I am allergic to because it similar to peanuts which I and many other people are allergic to this really sucks couldn't you have chosen something like soy which more people are able to eat=(

Tianna

I feel your pain temjana as I am also allergic to protein. I'm also however allergic to soy and would argue that soy allergies are just as common. Soy is also just pretty controversial due to the GMO thing and the poor practices that are used to grow soy, ie burning down hectares of the rain forest to plant monocultures of GMO soy...

Hi Temjana, unfortunately it isn't so simple, and all of our grain meat products are soy-free. We hope to return to our original recipe for Canada, but need help changed the outdated regulations via the Plant Foods Council. I apologize that you aren't able to eat the sausages! I believe food services (restaurants, etc) can still order the US version, so perhaps you can find a local place to eat them. Kind Regards

Why do they want protein tested on animals? Many animals are herbivores, makes no sense! Of course anything the government does or requires is a complete joke anyway! lol

I'd love to see the return of this product...sorry for those allergic to the pea protein, but really the Canadian laws are pathetically out of date. I agree that thinking of these products as "fake" meat is simply wrong-headed. All the ingredients going into them can be sold and consumed separately. They are real, not fake, products, and serve as food for those of us who are vegans, vegetarians, or simply want more options. Good luck with introducing your other product lines, as well. I'm a once happy Canadian customer looking to be so again.

Congratulations! I'm so happy to hear you'll be distributing your products in Canada again. Kudos to you on your plan to create a plant-based food industry council. So important to start pushing back against the pressure being exerted by the meat industry, such as recently seen in response to the revisions to the U.S. federal dietary guidelines (recommending the benefits of a vegan diet). As Jon Stewart stated this week, when discussing vegan food with his guest from a farm sanctuary, it would be so amazing if *someone* would come up with a good alternative to the term "meatless meat". Maybe your new council will come up with something? Good luck!

Codfish

I agree with Rebecca, I was very excited to see the apple sage sausages back on my local shelf, but somewhat let down by the change in taste and texture. They're not as "meaty" as before, and they now remind me of the Tofurkey Artisan sausages that mysteriously appeared on my local shelf shortly after the Field Roasts were removed, and which are vastly inferior to the original Field Roast sausage in every way. Please keep working to find a permanent solution that brings back the original recipe so I don't have to keep smuggling frozen sausages over the border in my colon. And to everyone else, let Harper and his band of fools (Rona Ambrose et al) know that we won't stand for this absurd injustice to continue any longer, so he better enjoy his last few months in office

I do not understand why vitamins are "fake". Often times vegans are lacking in certain nutrients so we do have to take some vitamins in some form, e.g. B12, calcium, vit. D, etc. What it does it ensure that nutrients that we may be more prone to be deficient in are available to us in food. While I do love many vegan meat products, such as my favorite Field Roast, I do think B12 fortification should be mandatory as not all vegans understand the need to supplement.

Rachael

I disagree, theoretically one should be able to get everything to sustain life from the natural world, the whole process of survival is based on the consumption of food sources that offer the best way for transference of calories to energy. External vitamin supplements can be dangerous and should be considered carefully. If one is not getting them from their naturally occurring food sources, than its time to rethink that food source. I certainly do not need the government telling me and controlling what vitamins I get and when and where. In my opinion this is not good news!

Is there a list of stores where you're available in Canada? My friend south of the border loves your products and I'd love to check them out.

Hello! If you enter your location on our Where to Buy page (fieldroast.staging.wpengine.com/where-to-buy) you will get a list of the stores where our products are sold. Give them a call to make sure they have the item you're looking for in stock before you head over!

Please get us the Celebration Roast! It's my favorite vegan roast, and I've asked several shops in our area to bring it in once it is ready to be shipped to Canada.

Thanks for your enthusiasm, Lola! I've added your feedback to our suggestion log - our goal is to one day have all of our products available in Canada. Have a great day!
